Project Overview
In March 2024, Augean participated in the two-day ‘STEMFest’ event held in Darlington, alongside 40 other companies from the North East. The event attracted approximately 1,500 students from primary and secondary schools in the Teesside area, providing them with an immersive and interactive experience designed to promote careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Each exhibitor showcased a unique aspect of their operations. Augean’s stand focussed on the varying densities of metals, a topic that resonated with students due to its relevance to the company’s work in radioactive waste treatment and metal recovery.

‘Exploring Density’ STEM Activity
During the event, students were presented with metal cubes of identical size, each composed of different metals. Each cube was labelled with its name, chemical symbol and a description of its everyday uses.
Students were challenged to identify which metal
they thought would be the heaviest on the scales,
relying on their knowledge of the periodic table, the concept of density, and information about the metals’
practical applications. Participants used the periodic
table handout designed by Augean to help them solve the activity. This interactive approach stimulated discussions among students and teachers, leading to engaging debates.
Many of the teachers found the activity interesting and useful, with several taking photographs of the display for use in their own classrooms.
