OPERATING 2 RADIOACTIVE WASTE SITES ACROSS THE UK

The UK has a well-established civil nuclear industry and the decommissioning of older nuclear sites is managed by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

Augean works closely with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in their mission to clean up the UK’s earliest nuclear sites safely, securely and cost effectively.

Alongside the NDA, Augean manages radioactive waste from a range of other sources, including NORM and Research Sites.

Our specialist centres process by-products and waste materials from the Radioactive Industry to provide cost effective solutions for re-use, recovery or disposal.  We have significant processing capacity to sustainably treat contaminated metals, solids and selected liquids.

The quality of our service and infrastructure, and the range and quantities of wastes we treat and dispose under our Environmental Permits, are valued by our customers.

From initial enquiry our team are on hand to guide customers through the process of safely and compliantly dealing with these often hard to handle wastes. Our technical team review all enquiries, understanding that timing is often crucial to keep a project moving.

Once a project is under way, our customer service team ensure all compliance paperwork meets regulatory standards with full reporting available.

RADIOACTIVE WASTES THAT WE CAN TREAT

  • All metal types (mild steel, stainless steel, galvanised steel, aluminium, lead, copper, brass, depleted uranium, etc.)
  • Cables for stripping
  • All material types (wood, metal, plastic, soft waste, redundant batteries, used electronic items, etc.)
  • Solid, aqueous liquid and organic liquid
  • Individual items up to 25 tonnes
  • Containerised and unpackaged wastes

Metals Treatment Process

Treatment Solutions

METAL TREATMENT

Generally radioactive contamination is found within paint, rust layers or the upper surface of metal items. By removing these surfaces we can remove contamination and then recycle the metal.

As metal can be a valuable resource, we recycle wherever possible for a number of reasons, primarily that recycling 1 tonne of steel saves around 1.5 tonnes of CO2.

Augean has been key to decontaminating and recycling metal from the nuclear industry since 2019.

SORT & SEGREGATION

Augean has received over 300 Half Height ISO containers (HHISO) of mixed waste for Sort and Segregation since 2020. These HHISO contained a mixture of incinerable waste, metal for treatment, cables for stripping and waste for disposal.

All waste is segregated and repackaged prior to being consolidated with other similar wastes, and consigned to the appropriate final treatment or disposal site.

LLW DISPOSAL

Augean operates the East Northants Resource Management Facility (ENRMF) which is permitted to dispose of solid Low Level Waste (LLW) up to 1000 Bq/g.

Each year we safely dispose of 5,000 to 12,000 tonnes of LLW, mainly from the decommissioning of the UK’s nuclear reactors.

The material is predominantly contaminated building materials and soils that cannot be reused or recycled.

SPECIALIST INDUSTRIAL SERVICES

Some customers do not generate significant volumes of radioactive waste or they may not have the necessary resources available for packing and processing waste.

In these cases, Augean can offer added value by deploying a team of trained operatives onto the customer’s site to perform these enabling actions and ensure the waste is suitable for onward transport and treatment.
