Project Overview
In June 2024, a pilot job swap scheme commenced, featuring Aaron from Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) who spent two weeks at an Augean facility. During this period, he primarily shadowed Jayde from the commercial team, whilst also spending time within the operations and chemist teams. Aaron gained hands-on experience with contaminated waste, monitored consignment deliveries, and observed Jayde’s role in these processes, giving him a comprehensive understanding of Augean’s policies, procedures and initiatives.
Augean demonstrated its commitment to collaboration as team members from various departments took the time to introduce themselves and contribute to Aaron’s experience at Augean.
In July 2024, Jayde returned the visit, spending two weeks at NWS. During her time there, she received an in-depth tour of the Low-Level Waste Repository (LLWR), including the grouting facility.
Jayde engaged in one-to-one discussions with colleagues across departments to understand how their roles align with the goal of waste diversion from the LLWR.
Close-out meetings were held at the conclusion of each phase of the job swap, facilitating valuable feedback and discussions on the potential for replicating this initiative with other organisations in the future.
Seeing procedures from the other side has helped me to understand the reasoning behind them, and gave the opportunity for my personal feedback to help streamline some of these. It was especially useful to meet the teams I am in contact with daily in my role at Augean, developing connections and seeing what their individual roles entail on a typical day.

My time at Augean was beneficial for NWS and personally. I learned a lot when shadowing a range of teams and partaking in some operational work. This experience has given me knowledge to take back to Cumbria and will also help to streamline work between NWS and Augean. Many thanks to everyone for being so welcoming. The work culture is something everyone at Augean should be proud of.
