Treatment and disposal of over 5,000 tonnes of hazardous material in preparation for future projects

Project Overview

Natara Global’s Hartlepool site has historic ground contamination associated with the Zinc and Sulphuric Acid plant that was previously on this land from the early 1900s until the late 1960s.

Following a number of projects on site a large quantity of contaminated land had been excavated and was being stored on a concrete pad on site.

To make space for future projects and site improvements Natara were looking for the contaminated soil to be removed within a short period of time.

The solution

Augean met with the customer and undertook site visits to assess the land and material during the negotiation period.

Routing the material the very short distance to Port Clarence, we evaluated the cost and managed all paperwork and processes in house for an easy transaction for Natara Global.

Over a 2 week period, Augean treated and disposed of over 5,000 tonnes of hazardous by metal sub soils.  The material was tested in 500-tonne batches and disposed of via the appropriate route, subject to the testing, to either stabilisation and mixed with other wastes at Port Clarence for recovery or disposal to hazardous landfill.

A lot of time and effort goes into preparation and setting up of a new site, before the waste is even produced and received by Augean. From finance requirements to Consignment/SEPA notes. By getting the hauliers involved from the beginning, it helps to create a strong working relationship, encourages conversations, new ideas and improvements. It highlights the importance of working together and having a safe environment for all.
