40 drums of radioactive Aloxite and Anthracite waste repackaged from a Nuclear Restoration Services site

Project Overview

Beginning November 2023 and concluding in April 2024, Augean assisted a site with the repackaging of drums filled with hazardous and radioactive Aloxite and Anthracite from a Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) site.

The project involved the acceptance, interim storage, repacking and consignment of the waste. The waste consisted of a total of forty 210-litre drums; comprising 26 drums of Aloxite and 14 drums of Anthracite.

Although the contents of the drums were Low-Level Waste (LLW), the activity of certain radionuclides within each drum was too high to allow the high temperature incinerator to process them in their original packaging.

The NRS site did not have the capacity to repack the waste on-site, and the consignee facility does not accept open or loose radioactive waste at their site. Therefore, Augean was able to work collaboratively with the high temperature incineration site to offer a collaborative approach which delivered a complete solution to NRS.

By working together, the waste was quickly and safely consigned from the NRS site to an Augean Treatment & Transfer facility, where it was repacked into multiple smaller packages that were acceptable to the
consignee’s waste acceptance criteria for their High Temperature Incinerator.

The radioactive levels of the waste required that the work took place in a Controlled Area as defined in the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), and the nature of the waste necessitated special working arrangements.

As a company who deals with hard to handle wastes, Augean were ideally placed to offer this solution to NRS.

Effective communication between all the parties involved led to the successful delivery of this project, on time and without issues. The completion of this work is another demonstration of Augean’s capability and expertise to deliver collaborative projects.

Project Overview

Project Name: NRS Trawsfynydd Drums

Volume: 8.4m3

Project Scope: Sort & segregation and disposal (via high temperature incineration)

Project Highlights:

  • Waste that was unable to be treated in its packaged state due to its high activity, avoided becoming orphan waste.
  • Augean offered a solution by accepting the waste as it was currently packaged.
  • After repackaging, the waste was consigned for high temperature incineration along with other wastes to be processed on the same site, which minimised the overall number of HGV movements required.
