PFAS contamination has emerged as one of the UK’s most urgent environmental challenges for communities and industries.

These chemicals, that are predominantly used in firefighting foams, cosmetics, food packaging, textiles, and industrial processes, particularly as specialist coatings, are valued for their durability. However, that very quality makes them persist in the environment creating a long-term presence that is difficult to eradicate.  Unsurprisingly this has raised serious health and environmental concerns.

At Augean’s Avonmouth site, we are making notable progress in tackling this issue through innovative treatment technologies. Our recent success with granulated activated carbon filtration demonstrates our commitment to providing effective, scalable solutions for PFAS-contaminated liquids.  Further advancements are underway, with plans to develop additional treatment processes across Augean sites.

With an estimated 10,000 contaminated sites nationwide and increasingly expensive cleanup costs, reliance solely on traditional solution methods such as High Temperature Incineration is no longer viable. Augean’s advanced approaches, which includes the safe disposal of low-leachability soils in our engineered landfills and closed-loop management of leachate, are setting new standards in environmental protection and sustainable waste management.
